CREATIVE QUESTS

I’m reading two music books, Ever Fallen In Love: The Lost Buzzcocks Tapes by Pete Shelley w/ Louie Shelley, and Creative Quest by Questlove.

I cleared the perimeter of the garage yesterday for a termite treatment, listening to the first Pharcyde record on my boombox--that made it more fun.  I guess Questlove is the guide I need to double back to a whole world of music I missed, being into other things, with only glimpses of a deep hip hop culture along the way.

The Buzzcocks are a band I didn’t get into until middle age, when I figured out they weren’t just the inventor of pop punk (not my favorite, save a few) but a smart, left-of-center band with great songs.  I grew into liking The Damned and The Fall on a similar timeline. I definitely want to catch this Descendents/Buzzcocks show in September.

Kardia (my bud from Big Brothers and Big Sisters) and I had a great outing yesterday, going to Target to spend some of a gift card I won--budgeting--“we teach  best what we need to learn”.  Then a stop at 5 Guys, and blasting each other at the carwash on Troost.  There was a little fair at the Jamaican restaurant next door to the carwash, with a bounce house/water slide and some jamming tunes by a dj under a pop-up tent.  K said no at first but when we rolled by he said “turn around, Dan, turn around.”  So we spontaneously checked this scene out and even then he wasn’t sure about jumping in to play but eventually he did and mayhem ensued with about 50 other kids and their parents all watching.

Hot dogs, cotton candy, and sno-cones in this tiny parking lot. I was so proud of him for getting through his shyness and hesitation in this pop-up scenario. I can relate. It took me a minute to move with the tunes.
