CHARIOT WHEEL - ADOBE FRESCO
JULY NOTES
For whatever reason I’ve had a little slowdown in the art department, guess it is busy times, but the energy is moving again.
I’m finishing Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. His world is an interesting to place to visit but not somewhere I’d want to return to often. You can feel the mental illness tightening in his work and that’s no literary badge of courage for me, anymore. I will also always associate this book with some Warby Parker progressive glasses that I have been unable to get used to, so maybe that has been making me crossways with it, as well.
Some years ago I read or listened to the teacher Byron Katie and her stuff about The Work. In the past couple of months I’ve felt called back to it and find the simplicity of it really helpful. I read spiritual growth books on a pretty regular cycle, between mysteries and international fiction and graphic novels and it’s kind of rare for one to re-surface years later for another look.
Music-wise I picked up Danny and The Doorknobs Poison Summer record on Bandcamp (being a fan of Urinals/100 Flower & The Last). This record is 38 years old and sounds so fresh! And the new Hollie Cook album Happy Hour is definitely my summer jam right now. It will be played at miniBAR vinyl Fridays and at our second annual shrimp boil this afternoon.
Squids finished tracking at Temple Sounds JUST before it closes its doors due to a crazy rent increase. What a jewel of a little studio it was, such a cozy and professional place to work in the heart of downtown. So the record will be mixed elsewhere and that’s fine. Working title is Time Management or maybe Just Enough Hours In The Day.
The Demo of The Month Club songs are now album length and I am set to work on the July song. This is my version of crowd-funding, not too many bells and whistles, just me doing what I typically do with a tip-jar factor and some perks.
