Where do songs come from?

I played this dumb riff over and over really fast while watching TV (too much coffee perhaps) and then it suddenly made sense much slower. Adding lyrics to it didn’t seem too important. Instru-mentals are a way to take a breather in the overall process (and in a set of live music or an album sequence).
