MUSIC FOR THE FILM: THE THINGS WE TELL THE ONES WE LOVE
I've been working off an on for a bit on some songs for my friend Eliza Fox and Matt Wilkins' film THE THINGS WE TELL THE ONES WE LOVE. It's a satirical horror/zombie film set in The Quad Cities, about a designer virus that impairs executive functions and pretty much turns people into big violent jerks. Society is underserved by policies of heavy privatization--you get the picture.
The song "Gonna Keep On" was written to replace a fairly well-known tune and took a few tries--writing to specification for a particular scene was hard at first but ultimately I was able to get out of the way, dial up my best vintage postpunk guitar sounds, and let it rip.
Chorused and saturated stereo signals revving up a pop-folk chord progression, guess who? I faked the drums with a Garageband loop and some additional drum kit sounds from my keyboard.
Working on this in stay-home mode was eerie. It became more than a situational song about a character who is keepin' on through heartbreak. It became a song about everyone in isolation, as well. Kind of a fight song. We're all gonna keep on.
